The Southern District Health Board commenced its plans to upgrade child and adolescent oral health services in the Otago-Southland region in 2009. This included replacing the region's existing school-based dental clinics with state-of-the-art fixed and mobile clinics.

Dental and Medical Equipment has developed a number of mobile dental units which travel throughout the region providing dental care to the provinces outlying schools. A total of seven mobile units will eventually be in service, three of them double-chair units. Two single-chair units are already in use in Southland.
